Ladders - How to Use Them Safely

Everybody needs to use a ladder at some point, even Kareem Abdul-Jabbar! Sometimes a short one like a step ladder will do in reaching a light fixture just out of reach. Other times, it's an extension ladder maybe outside reaching the second story of a home. I will in that position last summer when I needed to wash off some mildew on the siding of my home. I had to learn in a hurry how to use a ladder safely. Either that or better off paying someone else to do the job for me. Here are some rules for using a extension ladder so that no one gets hurt.

Saw Bits

Don't use an old damaged ladder even if it has been repaired. Unless you are sure the repair makes the ladder truly as good as new. Don't get in a hurry. Take one step at a time up and down the ladder. And don't come down the ladder backwards. Always face forward toward the ladder where you can hang on.

And then... this is one I have violated and should know better...don't reach beyond a comfortable reach. Go back down the ladder and move the ladder. Then go back up and easily reach what you need to. Failing to do this is one good way to fall off a ladder. I know because I've done it! Make sure your shoes are wet and don't have mud on them.

Make sure your ladder has safety feet. On my ladder these swivel on the bottom of the ladder legs and are made to prevent the ladder from slipping. Position these on a level surface and shake a bit to see that are holding steady.

The ladder you use must be the right length for the job. For example, if you are going onto the roof of your house, the ladder should rise at least 3 feet beyond the eave of the house. If the ladder is too long or too short you are likely not going to be able to get in the best position to do your work. Not only will it be uncomfortable, it will also be dangerous as you are more prone to fall off. If you have to get on the top 2 or 3 rungs of the ladder to reach your project, the ladder is too short. Don't do it, but get a longer ladder.

Like the bottom feet of the ladder, the top end should also be firm in its positioning. If you are painting get a small bucket and hooks when you get your paint. Use this from your extension ladder rather than trying to carry a full gallon paint up and down.
