The Amazing Story of the Inflatable Canoe

The inflatable canoe - seems like a nice modern piece of technology that we invented recently whereby you can fold up and store your boat and blow it up when you need it. You certainly cannot be blamed for guessing that it is a relatively new invention.

The stunning truth is that the inflatable has been around a long time - a very long time, in fact. Not just a hundred years or so but more like thousands. Hard to believe but it seems our ancestors did some good thinking a long time ago - they saw a problem, thought about it and then came up with a solution.

Saw Bits

You can just imagine a cave dweller sitting on the banks of a river and trying to work out how to get across. Maybe he saw animals cross and wished he could. Whatever the case, that cave man did some good lateral thinking because he came up with something kind of ingenious. He (or she) thought about making a boat out of animal skin and inflated by the mouth. And there are ancient images, carved out on cave walls that depict a one man flotation device crossing a river to prove this fact.

In the mid 1800's, naval and army personnel from both England and the US started to create flotation devices - more out of necessity than anything else. There was an Arctic expedition that needed something effective to negotiate small passages through ice and there was the Mexican-American War that needed a bridge of some sort so a general came up with the inflatable bridge pontoon. In 1839, the Duke of Wellington tested out the first pontoons.

The renowned name in rubber - Goodyear cannot be absent from this history as it was Charles Goodyear who created a process to vulcanize rubber - manipulate it and stabilize it to a point of flexibility and durability. And so the idea of a device that literally floated on air (with air) came into being.

So while the idea is not new, the technology has obviously moved on. The materials of the inflatable canoe and other inflatable boats are more advanced. Today, an inflatable canoe or kayak comes in both solo and 2 man models. In some of these models you will have fabric floors and in others the foam floors. The foam floor adds rigidity but the drawback here is that will make it less portable. One of the greatest advantages of having an inflatable - probably the main reason for getting one, is the mobility and easy transportation.

The beauty of an inflatable canoe is that you can store one in a closet in your functional city apartment, load it up into the car and head off into the wilderness. Do a bit of foot pumping action at the riverside and voila! One perfect canoe to go white water rafting or river paddling with/ Once the day is done, you simply dump the air and roll up your boat - pack it away and you're set. For convenience and mobility the inflatable canoe is a great choice - all thanks to those early pioneers back in the day.
