Universal Motor in Your Table Saw - Some Important Points You Should Know

There are many experienced woodworkers who are of the opinion that the standard table saw fitted with a universal motor should be opted only if you are a novice and are not interested in any serious woodwork whatsoever. While this may sound like a very harsh assessment, it must be allowed that the universal motor, more often than not, is not good enough to take up big tasks.

Saw Bits

The biggest problem that the person faces is the lack of power in cutting wooden boards. The universal motor is an example of a one size fits all policy adopted by the manufacturers. While it is convenient to reduce cost by installing the same type of motor with minor variations in different devices, there's no doubt that performance takes a huge hit.

Saw Bits

Experts also point out that going in for a table saw with universal motor only increases the chances of damage due to wear and tear and vibrations. This is because the device is not capable of undertaking big tasks. The end result is that the motor is often stretched to the maximum when high performance is required.

This results in faster wear and tear and more expenditure on maintenance. Further, it also results in complications in the form of excessive vibrations. Beginners might often find it difficult to focus on precession cutting with so many jerks and movements on the surface of the table saw.

Does this mean one should ignore universal motors completely? Well, this is a subjective decision. If you intend to start using the bench top table saw as a hobby, you need not pay special attention to the choice of motor.

However, if you intend to use the device for commercial and professional purposes, it is obvious that you should go in for a device that has a proven track record of catering to your requirements.

The smartest option is to focus on other resources apart from the guarantee or the promises made by the manufacturer. There are many persons who do not bother about this point and end up purchasing the table saw as if it is a single package.

Remember, the size of the blade and the capacity of the motor happened to be the most important characteristics. You cannot take excessive precautions when you're dealing with these two features.

Rather than purchasing the device and regretting at a later date, you should go in for a specific resource that will give you the necessary information before you take a final decision relating to your table saw.

Grout Grabber GG001 Grout Removal Tool for Most Reciprocating Saws or Sawzalls Feature

  • Grout removal tool accommodates any joint size from 1/16-to-1/2-inch
  • Fits in most common reciprocating saws or Sawzalls; dustless
  • Carbide grit ensures longer life
  • Includes tool, adaptor, 1 blade, 1 Allen wrench, all hardware; optional additional blades not included
  • 6-inches long; 2-inch blade

Grout Grabber GG001 Grout Removal Tool for Most Reciprocating Saws or Sawzalls Overview

If you're looking for a tool to speed up the process of removing damaged or mildewed grout, then Grout Grabber is for you. The Grout Grabber kit includes 1 adapter, 1 carbide grit blade, and 1 Allen wrench. You'll need a reciprocating saw, preferably cordless. Using the Allen wrench, mount the grout grabber adapter and carbide grit blade on a reciprocating saw. To remove existing grout, approach the grout line at a low speed and cut into the joint until you reach the bottom of the joint. It is especially comfortable to hold the saw in an upside-down position. At the bottom of the joint, increase saw speed and pull backwards, never use Grout Grabber at full speed. Be especially careful as you approach a grout intersection. A tile or two may be out of alignment, and it is possible to chip a tile's edge with the tool. Pay attention, but let your tool do the work. The replaceable carbide grit-coated blades are 1/16" thick, which allows you to work with tiles that have a thin grout line. On the other hand, you can add a total of 4 blades to the shaft (two on each side) to cut grout lines up to 1/2" in a single pass. Wider grout lines can be cut with a second pass. It is important to choose a blade thickness less than the joint width to prevent the tool from binding in the grout line and damaging the edges of the tiles. Whether you are a homeowner or a professional, this tool will get about 300 square feet from a single blade depending on how old the grout is and the type of grout used. There is very little grout dust, but it will be very fine, so be sure to use a good shop vac or a vacuum that has a clean bag and filter to prevent blowing the dust back out into the room. If you are looking for a professional looking grout removal job that can be done quickly, then Grout Grabber is for you!

Should I Buy a Table Saw Or a Radial Arm Saw?

It's true that a table saw and a radial arm saw do a lot of the same things; they perform many of the same applications accurately and reliably. Just like all craftsmen, though, each tool and each machine has a specialty, something it does better than anything else; the table saw and radial arm saw are no exception to this rule.

Saw Bits

Among other applications, both saws can rip, and both saws can crosscut. The radial arm saw, however, is the undisputed crosscutting champion limited only by the length of its arm. Similarly, the table saw is an unparalleled ripper limited only by its workable area (which is determined by the size of the blade opening in the saw table). Ultimately, a radial arm saw's specialty is crosscutting, where the table saw specializes in rip cuts.

Saw Bits

Despite their similarities, it is surprisingly difficult for one of these saws to replicate the other's specialty. Because, it is generally difficult to keep larger boards (approximately four feet or larger) square to a table saw blade (especially without a sliding panel cutter), it can be pretty darn difficult to perform efficient, accurate crosscuts on a table saw. Likewise, ripping on a radial arm saw is particularly challenging; despite the use of push-sticks or hold-down wheels, operators must still push lumber underneath the motor housing - a task both difficult and dangerous. Rips are additionally challenging with a radial arm saw as, as aforementioned, the rip width is limited by the length of the saw's arm. Also, because the blade's teeth remain in each cut for longer intervals, a radial arm saw has a much greater propensity to overheat during rips in thick wood. It's possible to reduce this overheating by cutting a deep groove into the saw's table-top, but there will still be an excess of saw dust and a high likelihood of overheating (this, of course, is never good for any tool's motor).

Still, both saws are very versatile in the shop. A radial arm saw, though, is far more useful for applications outside of the sawing realm. It can be fitted for overhead routing applications, surface planing, and drum sanding applications as well. Similarly, most table saws can be fitted with a disk sanding attachment. The radial arm saw though, is also particularly great with dadoes and rabbets providing better blade visibility and a better line of sight than that of a table saw.

The radial arm saw may take the prize for max versatility in the shop, but it is also more difficult to work with and generally less accurate. Cuts are more difficult and time consuming to set up, and the saw itself requires a lot more fine-tuning, recalibrating, and realigning to maintain any degree of comparable accuracy.

Of course, both saws are still precision, high-performance woodworking machines, and both are capable of superior accuracy. However, because the radial arm saw requires more complicated assembly and has a cantilevered arm attached to a cantilevered column (which places a lot of stress on the tool's working parts and components), it is a bit more volatile where accuracy is concerned. By virtue of its design alone, the arm itself poses an accuracy problem almost enticing blade wander and deviation as the arm and its parts wear over time. Similarly, although a table saw is generally heartier in construction, its miter gauge (which may joggle off-mark) may just be its Achilles heel in maintaining optimal accuracy. - It's worth noting here that if your budget precludes you from buying a high quality saw, buying a lower quality table saw is a much better choice than buying a lower quality radial arm saw. Because of the radial arm saw's cantilevered and very complicated construction, its smarter to only invest in a higher quality model.

It is also important for one to consider shop space. A radial arm saw requires far less space to function properly when compared to a table saw. Needing only a few feet of free space to its right and left sides, it can be pushed straight up against a wall. A table saw, on the other hand, is a much bigger machine; it takes up more space and requires more space to function. To use all the features of a table saw, it must be the center of your shop with adequate open space on all four sides of the table.

As with any power tool or woodworking machine, these saws are dangerous to work with. The radial arm saw's blade is perilously exposed above work surfaces and because the blade can swivel and move, it is never in the same place twice. Angled crosscuts can also be especially dangerous as the blade then assumes the same space you might normally keep your hands. The spin direction of radial arm saw's blade also contributes an element of danger sometimes lifting your materials off the saw table during cuts. Similarly, although the table saw's blade is always in the same space, it can sometimes be quite invisible posing a grave threat to your fingers as you work, and although the blade's spinning action is different in a table saw, it can also throw your working materials. Ultimately, it is vitally and inexpressibly important to be safe, careful, cautious, and smart as you work with either of these saws.
When neglected or taken for granted in any way, their bite can be far worse than any bark.

In the end, your choice between a table saw or a radial arm saw should ultimately depend on what you need to do with it, and, perhaps more importantly, whether or not you have, have access to, or plan to have a good miter saw. A sliding compound miter saw, which will essentially do everything a radial arm saw will do only with greater accuracy, portability, and a much better price tag, is really a must-have tool, and is the perfect compliment to a nice table saw. So, if you have a good miter saw, invest in a table saw. If you don't have a good miter saw (although everyone really should), perhaps a radial arm saw is a more universal, more practical choice. NOTE: As miter saw technology continues to grow, the radial arm saw is becoming less and less popular. I, in fact, predict the radial arm saw is approaching the top of the endangered species list much faster than the top of any craftsman's to-purchase list.

Laminate Flooring How To - Covering Concrete Stairs With Laminate

You have a beautiful laminate floor and you're wondering if you should finish the concrete stairs in laminate to give the space a cohesive, designer feel. First of all, is it possible? Can you cover concrete with laminate? The answer is yes. In fact, if you've ever covered wooden stairs, the process is similar, except that the nosing installation is a little trickier.

Saw Bits

What You'll Need

Saw Bits

To accomplish this task you'll need:

PL200 or stronger construction glue Skill saw for cutting laminate Chop saw for cutting metal nosings drill with a concrete bit electric screwdriver plastic plugs broom

I recommend using metal nosings as these are stronger, and will hold better on concrete stairs. (Laminate nosings that come in a kit are also trickier as the tracks need to be in exactly the right spot, and there isn't a lot of standardization--every manufacturer makes a slightly different size/style of laminate nosing).

What to Do

Start by sweeping the stairs and cleaning up any shavings or dust. You'll need a clean surface for the glue to adhere properly to the concrete and laminate. Once the area is clean, start with the risers first.

Measure, mark and cut each laminate plank to fit the riser with the groove side facing downwards. Glue the riser and the back of the plank, and secure the plank in place, again, making sure that the groove is at the bottom of the riser. Once all the risers are glued, you're ready to start on the nosings.

Begin by measuring and cutting the metal nosings to fit. Mark on the concrete where the screws will go, then using a drill with a concrete bit, drill the holes. Place a plastic plug in each hole. Number the nosings so that you match each one to the correct tread when you screwnail them in later.

Measure, mark and cut each laminate plank to fit the tread with the groove side facing inwards to meet the bottom of the riser. Arranging the planks so that the groove on the riser meets the groove on the tread makes for a clean, professional edge in the corner. Glue the tread and the back of the plank and secure the plank in place, making sure that groove faces inward.

Stair nosings are intended to finish the look by capping the lip of the stair. Unfortunately, with concrete stairs this can be a little tricky as the lip on the stairs is often thicker than the actual stair nosing. If this is the, cut a laminate plank so that it's wide enough to cover the the concrete lip, and glue it to the face of the lip on each tread. Then secure the nosing over top by screwnailing it through the laminate tread into the pre-drilled holes in the concrete. (If you've already covered the lip-face with laminate, you can glue the nosing to the laminate for extra adherance, and then screwnail the top of the nosing into place.)

Lighted Halloween Decorations

The Dewalt Scroll Saw and the Weekend Hobbiest

The possibilities of making wood crafts and decorations
are unlimited, when you have the right tools, and patterns.
Dewalt tools are my preference, for the simple fact that they
are dependable and they have a large variety for just about
every job imaginable.

Saw Bits

When it comes to making crafts and decorations the Dewalt
tool I am really impressed with is the scroll saw. This tool allows
you to cut some really detailed designs. You will need to have
a drill on hand so you can make a starter hole for inside cuts.
With this saw you can make wall hangings, clocks, decorations
to set on you mantel or entertainment center ect... Lets go over
a couple of these in more detail.

Saw Bits

If your wanting to make a wall hanging with your dewalt scroll
saw. First you need to decide on the pattern. This can be
something you drew up yourself or something you purchased.
Second, you need to decide what type wood you want pine, oak,
cherry, walnut, etc... to get the look you prefer. Third, place you
pattern on the surface and trace the design. After you get it
transferred, take your dewalt drill and with a small bit drill holes
in the center designs to be cut out. Now your ready for your
dewalt scroll saw. Loosen the blade adjustment and place the
blade through one of the pre-drilled pilot holes and reattach it to
the saw and set the blade tension. Make your cut. Repeat this
step until all your designs are finished. Sand it down add a little
varnish and your done. You can also glue some colored felt on
the back to really bring out the artwork.

If you want to make a clock with your dewalt scroll saw. First
you need to get a battery operated clock assembly. Your local
craft store should be able to help you with this. Transfer your
design just like with the wall hanging. But, before you drill the
pilot holes you need to add in the place for your clock fixture.
Make sure you place it in your design where it will have enough
wood to hold it solid. Make your cuts, do the finish work, add the
clock assembly and you have just made yourself a hand crafted
clock.

For making a mantle it is basically the same as the wall hanging,
just leave a flat spot on the bottom of your design. Cut out a platform
and take your dewalt router and put a contoured edge around the
top and glue your designed piece in the center. And you have a
mantle piece.

I suggest sticking with single piece designs until you get the feel
of your dewalt scroll saw. Then you can move on to multiple piece
designs that need to be glued together. But with a little practice, the
possibilities of things you can make with this dewalt tool is unlimited.

Why Rent a Concrete Saw?

Supplementing basic equipment with specific equipment rentals only when you need them is a great way to extend your fleet and compete for more projects. Your local equipment rental yard lets you eliminate the need for a large warehouse or storage area. Plus, you'll be letting someone else handle - and pay for - the warranty, maintenance and upkeep.

Saw Bits

The phrase, "set in stone," alludes to the permanence of materials, such as concrete. Still, when the time arrives to cut or remove concrete, renting a tough, saw makes the work possible. Consider these advantages of renting a saw.

Saw Bits

Multiple applications. Rented saws let you cut through walls and floors to create openings for windows and doors or for installing pipes or ducts. They also allow you to cut concrete for repair or removal, as well as to create control joints in concrete before it cures.

Versatile. Rented saws can cut through not only concrete, but also rebar-reinforced concrete, stone and steel. This makes them ideal for demolition work.

Clean and precise. Unlike other methods of concrete demolition, such as using a jackhammer, rented saws let you make precise, clean cuts that will leave surrounding areas undamaged. They also create less dust and noise than jackhammers do.

Renting saves money. When you need a saw, nothing else will do. Since most people do not need a concrete saw often, renting one offers a cost-effective alternative to buying expensive equipment, only to store it for most of its life.

Contact your local, ARA-affiliated, rental store for information on available rental products and services to meet your saw needs. To locate the rental store nearest you, use the Rental Store Quick Locator.

Vertical Compressor Ipod Docking Station

How to Make a Professional, Killer DubStep Reese Bass - Secrets Revealed

Dubstep, techno and drum and bass technicians will at some point want a heavy Reese bass for there new dance floor track. The Reese bass is the classic 'dirty bass' sound. From the deeper terrorist Reese to the intense alien girl Reese they all have one thing in common. The saw tooth wave.

Saw Bits

Firstly, get a multi oscillator synth (ideally 3 or 4 oscillators) for example the native massive, ES2 by Logic or reasons maelstrom. You will want to set the first oscillator and all the other oscillators to the saw tooth wave form. There are many harmonic frequencies in the saw tooth, The normal waves ramps upward and then drops sharply. There are also sawtooth waves where the wave ramps down and then rises sharply. That kind of sawtooth wave is called a 'reverse sawtooth' or 'inverse sawtooth'. As signals, the two variations of the sawtooth sound the same until paired together.

Saw Bits

After you have got your synth running with 3 oscillators, it's time to detune them by around +/- 25cents, this is very effective for drum and bass and dubstep. This gives the Reese a very dark edgy sound, rather than just a buzzy electro kind of sound.

Once you have got your detuned saw tooth, (this is essentially the basis of the Reese) - You can go ahead and start twisting and shaping the sound for your specific genre, dubstep or drum and bass. Here are some of the main parameters you can use:

ASDR on the filter A interesting method to get a movement on the Reese bass is to add filtering triggered by an envelope, Reese bass patches are very sensitive to filters and utilizing a high pass filter you can get a very driven sounding lead, or use a low pass and get a very nice bass. try using about 20% of filter attack for dubstep and 30% for jungle.

Phaser Because of the harmonic phases all ready occurring due to the multiple oscillation, adding a phase plug in can and does work very well. It's better to use a sparse amount of phase to subtly enhance the sound rather than extreme amounts

Flanger The flange process can add a nice bit of subtle metallic rasp to the sound, this helps gives you a big bad dubstep sound.

Delay The delay effect can make a Reese sound wicked! Pre drop delayed Reese bass can add a very tense build up.

Reverb Again subtle uses of reverb can act very effectively on your sound, Guitar amp reverbs tend to work well with Reese bass and also come packed with distortion for extra bite.

Other effects that enhances your Reece include: Distortion, compression, LFO, unison and analogue knobs (like on the ES2 and massive) and auto filters work especially well with dubstep.

In summary, it is best to process your Reese line a lot for dubstep and drum and bass music production. It's a well used if not over used sound, so to make it stand out you will have to be creative with your sound programming skills - Filters act in the most effective way and reverb is king!
