I Stands for Innovation - 6 Skills Today's Leaders Need to Turn Ideas Into New Products and Services

INNOVATION! You see the word everywhere today, in every business journal and even on billboards. Everyone is talking innovation these days, because we are all competing to find the next big idea...a way to make our next million!

Saw Bits

But what does it take to truly be innovative? See, innovation to me is a bit different than creativity. From my perspective, creativity is thinking of new ideas. The majority of people say that they have creative ideas all day long, but they never do anything with them...they don't speak about them, write about them or do anything to try to get them into the marketplace.

Saw Bits

Innovation is a bit different...it is a process which may or may not start with creative thinking. From my observations, innovation is much more related to a creative thinker being out in the world, noticing something odd or something new and asking the question "WHY?" and then "HOW?" She then goes and answers the question "WHY?" by coming up with the HOW and then creating something brand new that never existed. So, the creativity is sparked most often by a question or an observation in life.

I have never met Amazon Founder, Jeff Bezos (who changed my life! I am an Amazon junkie!), but the stories and interviews I have read and heard go something like this.

Bezos is of course one of these computer geniuses who in the early 1990's noticed that internet usage was increasing by 2300 percent a year. At this time, the internet was not really being used for commerce (a small bit but not to a great degree) but he knew it was coming, so he immediately began looking at what type of offering he could make on the internet that would change the way we all do business.

So, Bezos went about reviewing the top 20 mail order businesses and began asking himself several questions such as "What type of business could be conducted more efficiently over the Internet than by traditional mail order Because there were no comprehensive mail order catalogs for books (they would be gigantic), he believed that the internet would be a perfect vehicle to set up an online bookstore.

Bezos began attending book conferences, publishing events and becoming masterful on how to best sell books. This venture selling books online started in his garage (how many times have we heard this scenario about innovation? Starting in a garage or a bathroom?), and here we are today...buying everything under the sun on Amazon. I had to do a little time capsule display a few months ago, and I ordered a bottle of Tang on Amazon, have recently purchased a clock, furniture, and bedding on the Amazon and just saw where I can even buy a lawn mower...they have everything imaginable.

I could probably go on and on about other great innovators like Steve Jobs, whose big motive is to "Put a ding in the universe" or Bill Gates, whose vision was to see every home in the world with a computer running windows (that was going to be possible until Steve Jobs came along and said...I think we can do this better and in a way that is really hot/cool"). But, the bottom line is that these innovators use certain skills including:

1. Breaking up the status quo. Innovators don't accept that what is available is the best option. They take ideas that are already in existence and make them better.

2. Questioning everything. Innovators invest a great deal of time each day asking questions...asking "Why?" and "How?" and "What's next?" By sitting down and writing out some questions that are the unthinkable each day, you can exercise your innovative thinking.

3. Brainstorming. Most innovators are not sitting in their offices alone thinking up ideas. They get out and talk to people and get ideas. My husband, Mike and I are building a home right now, and we have a great crew helping us out. We have hit about 100 snags, and we then go to our crew and say "Okay...we have this issue, let's talk options...what are all of the possible solutions." And, as soon as the best one comes to the surface, we act...but trust me...we are relying on the bright ideas of others to make this home beautiful and truly efficient and effective.

4. Nosy-ness. Most innovators are nosy. They get into doors and look around. They open drawers and look at files and scope out retail shops and look around. They take in everything, and pull it all back in and say..."Hmmm...something is missing, and it is this."

5. Problem Oriented Passion. The majority of people I have met who are truly innovators started their big idea because they quite frankly got ticked off about something not working in life. The positive passion and inspiration are great, but the majority of time, something is missing in life or someone needs something to make life easier, and they go out and find a way to make it happen. Duct Tape was invented to keep moisture out of the ammunition cases (see...a problem was here...moisture was getting into ammunition cases). Because it was waterproof, people referred to the tape as "Duck Tape." Of course, now, we use Duct Tape for everything...I saw a show one night on all of the uses for Duct Tape...including a house that had repaired everything in the house with Duct Tape. You can see some of the uses for duct tape here.

6. Stick-To-Itiveness. I am not 100% sure of the accuracy of this quote, but quote masters say that Thomas Edison said "I have not failed 1,000 times. I have successfully discovered 1,000 ways to NOT make a light bulb." Whether or not this is an accurate quote, I have studied Edison enough to know that he was a master of sticking to a project and continuously experimenting so that he could get it right. He did indeed finally discover the magical formula for the light bulb, yet so often, we stop our innovative processes after failing one single time. If you are going to lead the edge in your industry, you have to be willing to stick to it until you reach your new idea comes to life.

If you are a leader or business owner who is struggling with innovation, I would welcome the opportunity to speak with you to see how I can be of assistance. Just send an e-mail to bea@beafields.com, and we will set up a time to speak.

Who Makes the Best Miter Saw for the Buck?

Who Makes the Best Saw?

Saw Bits

There are a quite a few saws for sale at your local hardware store or even on-line; from manufacturers such as Bosch, Ryobi, DeWalt, Makita and Black & Decker. Besides the many types listed below, there are different sizes: 7 1/2 inch, 10 inch and 12 inch. They also may come with additional features like a light, laser guide or a stand. Finally, you should think about the price and which can provide the greatest value for its functionality and features.

Saw Bits

So Tell Me...Who Does Make the Best Miter Saw?

For the professionals - I will recommend the Makita LS1216LX. This 12 inch blade saw comes equipped with a laser guide for precision cutting and a steady stand that allows it to be both portable and ready to work when you are. A new one goes for about 0, which may seem a bit expensive until you have actually used one a couple times and then you may wonder how you ever got along without one.

For the do-it-yourselfers - because the functionality and price, you simply cannot beat the Makita LS1040 10 inch compound miter saw. It usually retails for just under 0, but seems to dip in price around Father's day and at end-of-the-summer sales. Its 10 inch blade should take care of any job around your home and since it is a compound miter saw, you will be able to make precision cuts both vertically and horizontally.

What Makes Up A Miter Saw

It is primarily used in making exact degree angle cuts in masonry, wood, concrete or even metal. Prior to electrical tools (and often today for those of us on a budget) a miter box and a hand saw were used to make the exact degree angle cuts. These cuts are necessary for bringing together two or more pieces of material in a flush manner. Therefore, a power miter saw is merely a bringing together of the circular power saw and a miter box. It often provides exacting and amazing results in a very easy-to-use yet powerful way. A couple of the regular uses for this type of saw are crown molding and floor boards; each in need of meeting up flush at their joints.

What Are the Different Types of Miter Saws??

There are some distinct and different types of miter saws:

Standard - has a fixed vertical blade that can pivot, which creates horizontal angle cuts Compound - has a rotating blade that can pivot both horizontally and vertically, which can create angle cuts in dual planes Sliding Compound - is the same as the compound saw with sliding arms added to allow a much broader cut Dual Compound - add to the sliding compound saw with an additional feature of tilting both left and right when making cuts.

When Did They Get Developed?

A version of the manual miter saw has been with us for a couple thousand years. The very first power miter saw showed up in the early 70's and had limited capability. The sliding compound saw didn't appear until the later part of the 1980's and it helped change the do-it-yourself business by allowing people to create their own professional looking results.

The Amazing Story of the Inflatable Canoe

The inflatable canoe - seems like a nice modern piece of technology that we invented recently whereby you can fold up and store your boat and blow it up when you need it. You certainly cannot be blamed for guessing that it is a relatively new invention.

Saw Bits

The stunning truth is that the inflatable has been around a long time - a very long time, in fact. Not just a hundred years or so but more like thousands. Hard to believe but it seems our ancestors did some good thinking a long time ago - they saw a problem, thought about it and then came up with a solution.

Saw Bits

You can just imagine a cave dweller sitting on the banks of a river and trying to work out how to get across. Maybe he saw animals cross and wished he could. Whatever the case, that cave man did some good lateral thinking because he came up with something kind of ingenious. He (or she) thought about making a boat out of animal skin and inflated by the mouth. And there are ancient images, carved out on cave walls that depict a one man flotation device crossing a river to prove this fact.

In the mid 1800's, naval and army personnel from both England and the US started to create flotation devices - more out of necessity than anything else. There was an Arctic expedition that needed something effective to negotiate small passages through ice and there was the Mexican-American War that needed a bridge of some sort so a general came up with the inflatable bridge pontoon. In 1839, the Duke of Wellington tested out the first pontoons.

The renowned name in rubber - Goodyear cannot be absent from this history as it was Charles Goodyear who created a process to vulcanize rubber - manipulate it and stabilize it to a point of flexibility and durability. And so the idea of a device that literally floated on air (with air) came into being.

So while the idea is not new, the technology has obviously moved on. The materials of the inflatable canoe and other inflatable boats are more advanced. Today, an inflatable canoe or kayak comes in both solo and 2 man models. In some of these models you will have fabric floors and in others the foam floors. The foam floor adds rigidity but the drawback here is that will make it less portable. One of the greatest advantages of having an inflatable - probably the main reason for getting one, is the mobility and easy transportation.

The beauty of an inflatable canoe is that you can store one in a closet in your functional city apartment, load it up into the car and head off into the wilderness. Do a bit of foot pumping action at the riverside and voila! One perfect canoe to go white water rafting or river paddling with/ Once the day is done, you simply dump the air and roll up your boat - pack it away and you're set. For convenience and mobility the inflatable canoe is a great choice - all thanks to those early pioneers back in the day.

How To Talk To The Police When Stopped For A Traffic Violation

When I first started police work about 10 years ago, I would never of guessed in a million years I would see what I see daily. I'm not talking about the stuff that everyone associates with police work, like murder scenes, accidents, gangs, etc., those are a given. I'm talking about traffic stops specifically, and how you're talked to as an officer on these stops at times.

Saw Bits

Let me explain. Here's a situation I was in one time where I was working a school zone area. We had received numerous complaints from the school that people were constantly speeding up and down the road. Of course, there were children in the area so it was somewhat serious. Let me also add, my general rule as an individual officer is (and every officer is different), is stopping for 15 MPH over, and issuing the ticket for 5 MPH over. I think that's more then fair, and most people are happy to hear that. But there's always that one guy or girl that wants to give you a hard time as a police officer.

Saw Bits

I can remember stopping a guy that was going 19 over (54 MPH in a 35 MPH zone). The guy was very polite until I came back with the ticket for 5 over. That's when all hell broke lose. He started yelling at me, and even tried getting out of his car (I pushed it back shut and told him to deal with it in court, not here). Literally, for about 4 minutes, I listened to him yelling at me telling me he was having a bad day and that he didn't deserve a ticket because of that. He was yelling so loud that he was spitting as he was talking. If you were driving by, you might think he was having a seizure or something (this example is a little more extreme then most).

The whole time, I'm trying to be nice explaining that its only for 5 over; that other people were cited for the same amount; etc. But he didn't care (one thing you learn after working the streets for awhile is no matter how much you talk, how convincing, how much proof, etc. you have, some people DO NOT want to hear what you're saying).

Long story short, I finally got mad and told him to wait in his car. I went back to my cruiser for a moment and put the ticket back to the original amount of 19 MPH over (as the ticket was never actually issued since he refused to take it originally). When I returned, I listened for about 10 seconds, and tossed the ticket in his car since he wouldn't take it, and walked away. There was no point in standing there as he had his mind made up.

The whole point to this is all I wanted to do was issue the ticket while at the same time giving him a break. But some people don't want breaks. I can't tell you how many people I've dealt with that are rude and disrespectful during a stop. I don't mind people asking me why I stopped them, or even explaining why they did what they did; that's all fine, but yelling at me isn't going to help.

So I've put together some examples of things NOT to do to help yourself on a traffic stop:

1. Be respectful just as you would when talking to a friend or family member. You don't have to kiss up, but you should try to be professional and polite when talking to the officer. Its important to remember that officers take in a lot everyday, and their patience starts to wear thin.

2. Don't yell out immediately "Why did you stop me!" I can't tell you many times this actually happens. I even get a lot of "Why the f**k did you stop me?" It still amazes me. Obviously this will not help you at all.

3. Showing off in front of your friends in the car is not good. For instance, ignoring the officer while he's standing there, keeping your radio turned up loud, looking away, etc.

4. Blatant lying. Probably 7 out of every 10 people I stop tell me they didn't do what I just saw them do. If you're going to do this, at least be a little bit convincing. For example, I've had people tell me far fetched versions of coming to a complete stop at a stop sign for instance, when they went through it so fast I've had to look up to make sure the sign was still posted. I can tell you from personal experience, the people that are honest with me, apologize, and tell me the reason (i.e. I'm running late for work, I apologize) will usually get the breaks. My personal attitude is since its been my experience that since I feel that most are being dishonest with me, why not reward the ones that are honest.

5. Fake tears. If an experienced officer suspects that you are crying purposely to get out of a ticket, you will almost always get the ticket and no break.

6. Telling the officer things like "You don't have anything better to do with your time?" and "You mean to tell me this is more important then catching a bank robber?" These statements are all too often used, and will not help you at all.

These are just a few things you can do to help yourself when getting pulled over. Just remember, these officers are just doing their jobs. The more resistance you give them in doing their jobs, the more resistance you're likely to get yourself. If you're convinced you did nothing wrong, don't argue with the officer; handle it in court. Explaining your case to a judge or magistrate in a calm, professional and logical manner will go much farther then arguing or giving the officer a hard time in the street.

Building Kitchen Cabinets - A Tool Checklist For DIY'ers

So you want to build your own kitchen cabinets? You certainly can do it, but make sure you have all the right equipment. This is a quick overview of the tools you will need.

Saw Bits

Tools You Will Need

Saw Bits

Circular Saw - Kitchen cabinet casework starts with cutting plywood and panel parts, and you'll need a good circular saw with a plywood cutting blade to accomplish this task. An edge guide will help you make your cuts straight and square. Cutting plywood and panel parts on a table saw is not a good idea, unless you have a table saw set-up with a large outfeed table.

Table Saw - For ripping board stock to make cabinet face frames and cabinet door frames, you'll need an accurate table saw. Many good bench top table saws will be suitable for this process.

Miter Saw - For cutting board stock to length, a good miter saw is required. Cutting board stock to length includes cutting cabinet face frames, cabinet door frames, and all moldings.

Random Orbital Sander - For finishing all casework and board stock, you'll need a random orbital sander with a variety of sandpaper grits.

Cordless Drill - Kitchen cabinets can be assembled using screws. A good 18 volt cordless drill with a backup battery will make your cabinet assembly go smoothly. Please get an extra battery so that you won't lose time waiting for batteries to recharge.

Kreg Jig - The kreg jig offers a system to assemble cabinet face frames with pocket screws. All major cabinet companies build their cabinet face frames with pocket screws - so should you. There is no need to build mortise and tenon joints on your face frames.

Nail Gun - Cabinet installation requires a nail gun for attaching all moldings on your kitchen cabinets.

Some Tools You May Need

Planer - If you decide to mill your own board stock, you'll want to have a planer. This makes sense if you decide to use board stock not commonly available at the home centers - like cherry and alder.

Sprayer - For finishing cabinet doors and face frames, an hvlp sprayer can make staining and finishing a faster process.

Miscellaneous Jigs - If you're using European hinges on your cabinets (cup hole hinges), you'll want a good hinge hole jig. Also, attaching drawer slides inside cabinet casework goes a bit more smoothly with the help of a drawer guide jig.

Building your own kitchen cabinets is a big project. It's a project that most DIY'ers can tackle, but you'll want to have all the right tools to make the project easy to manage and complete. Please consider these tools before you get started.

Router Bit Speed - Getting the Best Cut Safely

Better routers are equipped with a speed adjustment that allows for speed adjustment typically ranging from around 8,000 to 24,000 rpm (revolutions per minute). The reason is that not all router bits can be safely or optimally run at the same speed. Larger router bits have more mass and therefore a potential to create forceful vibration at higher speeds.

Saw Bits

It's important understand what router speed actually measures. "Revolutions per minute" is simply a measure of the number of times that the bit makes a complete revolution in a given period of time, and not a measure of the speed at which the body and cutting surfaces of the bit are actually traveling. The outer perimeter of a 3-1/2" diameter bit is actually traveling significantly faster at 24,000 rpm (and much faster than it should be) than a 1/2" straight bit's cutting surface would be at the same shaft speed.

Saw Bits

Manufacturers often supply maximum free-running speeds for the router bits they sell. The maximum speed for a given bit is the maximum speed at which it can be safely operated, and may not be the best speed for the task. There are other factors to consider: router horsepower (a less powerful router will slow down when it's driving a large bit through a cut), feed rate, quality and condition of the bit, and the cutting properties of the material. It is impractical to give a list of specific speeds that will work well in every situation.

In general, a faster speed is more desirable than a slower one, for the simple reason that a faster speed provides more cuts per inch, and more cuts per inch normally yield a smoother cut. Using sharp, high quality bits and using the correct feed rate go hand in hand with bit speed in making a clean cut. Make practice cuts with a new bit until you are able to produce a smooth, even feed rate that is neither so fast that it produces a rough cut, or so slow that it results in burnishing and burn marks.

The chart below offers speed guidelines for the maximum safe free running speed of bits of various diameters. This is supplied for general reference - manufacturer's guidelines should be consulted:

Router Bit Diameter Maximum Speed
Up to 1" 22,000 - 24,000 rpm
1" to 2" 18,000 - 22,000 rpm
2" to 2-1/2" 12,000 - 16,000 rpm
2-1/2" to 3-1/2" 8,000 - 12,000 rpm
