Easy Steps to Installing a Router Extension On Your Table Saw

Several companies sell router table extension wings. Woodpeckers Inc. is one of these companies. Using their versions of the router table extension wings as an example, you can see how easy it is to add this helpful addition to your table saw.

Saw Bits

In our example, you will install the router extension table on the left side of your table saw. Other models may require a different configuration, but the process will essentially be the same. Made of 1" thick MDF laminated on both sides with a matte white high pressure laminate which brings the final thickness to 1 1/8th inches, the extension table is 21"x28". The router extension table also has a white plastic edging. In this particular model, the mounting package includes four brackets to mount the router extension table wing to the rails, phenolic insert with four aluminum spacer rings, stiffener rails, hardware and instructions. Installing the extension table is easy enough that it should not take you more than an hour to finish.

Saw Bits

Step 1

Remove the left wing of your table saw.

Step 2

After removing the existing table wing, you are going to mount the router table extension wing brackets to the rails per the instructions using the supplied T-nuts. Use the larger washers provided for this step. Put the T-nuts and washers together and slide four sets into the channel on both the front and back rails. You can then slip the brackets onto the hardware behind the washers.

Step 3

Line the outer brackets up with the end of the rail and snug the nuts down but do not completely tighten them. The inner brackets should be positioned about 2" from the saw table and also snugged down but not tightened. You do not want them completely tightened since they may have to be moved left or right to avoid interference with the stiffeners or to level the table.

Step 4

The insert cutout is going to be off-centered in the table. Flip the table upside down on the brackets with the widest part of the insert offset to the left or outside of the saw. Put one stiffener bar about an inch from the left side of the table and drill pilot holes for the screws. A helpful hint is to use blue tape on the drill bit to set the depth of the holes to make sure that you go all the way through. After drilling the pilot holes, you can screw down the stiffener. Repeat this process for the other stiffener placing it about an inch or so to the outside of the left edge of the insert cutout.

Step 5

If necessary, adjust the bracket or stiffener placements to avoid interference. After this is done, turn the table back over.

Step 6
Next, you will attach the brackets to the bottom of the table. Drill a pilot hole first and secure each bracket with just one screw. Before finishing, make sure the brackets and stiffeners don't interfere with each other and then finish the bracket installation.

Step 7

Now, it is time to position the table and brackets. Using a rule, set the table level front and back to the saw's table. Also check that the router extension table is flush up against the table saw.

Step 8

If the table is not exactly flat or sags, loosen the middle screw on the stiffener and insert a spacer. The space could be a piece of card stock that is the size of the sag. Once the screw is tightened again. The spacer will make the table flat.

Step 9

Now, it is time to put in the insert. The 3/8" black phenolic insert sits on a rabbet in the MDF tabletop. To level the insert in the opening, it has 8 leveling setscrews. You can adjust each one a little bit at a time going back and forth between all the screws until the insert is level and stable.

Step 10

This particular brand, Woodpecker, will pre-drill the mounting holes in the insert according to which router you tell them you will be mounting. Using the screws they provide, you now just mount your router to the insert on the router extension table.

This is just one option for a router extension table. You particular table saw may have a specific router extension table sold as an accessory. Whether you buy yours from Woodpecker or as an accessory, attaching the router extension table will offer you convenience in your woodworking shop.

Animal Bites

Animal bites can become quite severe very quickly, or lay dormant for a period of time. Human, fox, bat, squirrel, cat, and dog bites are the most frequent and the worst bites in decreasing order causing cellulites, abscess, and infections of the skin. With the exception of human bites this is the decreasing order for rabies infection. Rabies is an infection that usually is caused by an animal being bitten by an infected animal. They are distempered, rabid, and usually frothing at the mouth. The same thing can happen to a human from this infection process. If you are bit by a wild animal, pet, or neighbors pet, you need to make sure that you have or can get the animal's immunization records to ensure that they have had their rabies vaccine and it is up to date. If you were bitten by a wild animal, it needs to be trapped for testing for rabies. If not you may have to get a rabies vaccine series of injections.

Saw Bits

The P's of pet bites described by Lewis Pasture are still generally true today. Pet's often get a bacterial infection from pasturelli, a bacteria discovered by Lewis Pasture. Peptostreptococcus, staphylococcus aureus, and staphylococcus epidermis often found in the gingival, the pockets of the pets mouth where the tooth meets the gums, and in the plaque on the animals teeth. When one of these animals bites or nips you most of the time it is a superficial scraping that usually drains to the surface. However, when they bite you and penetrate the skin deeply and leave these bacteria in the skin they can cause very serious infections.

Saw Bits

For some reason cats seem to have a low incidence with bites of an initial showing infection. However, when they do get infected these organisms can be devastating. The farther you go away from the heart or down the extremity towards the finger tips or toes, the greater the increased chance for infection because of less blood supply directed from these sites. In other words an upper arm or thigh is generally less likely to get infected then the finger tips and toes. Lower extremity bites usually seem to be worse than upper extremities.

Hand bites from cats maybe worse because their type of tooth structure is more porus and has more bacteria. The cats tooth penetrates deeper leaving more bacteria therefore getting infected. The wound may be warm, red, and swollen within a few hours. In 12, 24, or 48 hours the wound can really swell with even ¼ to a ½ cup of pus under the skin. The lymphatic's can often be involved causing streaks up from the site moving up towards the heart. This is called blood poisoning. The heart pumps blood to the tips of the extremities and the veins usually bring about 99% of the blood back. However, the lymphatics bring the infection and this additional 1% back towards the heart. Lymphatics are very soft vessels something like a latex surgical glove. Their diameter is small like a single strand of hair increasing to the diameter of a pencil as it nears the heart. They have one way valves, and nodes with high concentrations of cellular antibodies to kill the bacteria. These nodes and valves are usually located on the flexor sides of a joint i.e. behind the knees or on the flexor surface.

When you bend these joints you pump this lymphatic fluid back towards the heart and it is purified and hopefully the bacteria are killed before it gets back to the superior vena cava just before the heart. The red streaking you see especially often in cat bites indicates lymphatic infection which is not under control and this can cause blood poisoning, amputation of the extremity, sepsis, and even death without proper immediate treatment. Immediate use of tablet antibiotics of a synthetic PCN mixed with clavulinic acid which helps stop antibiotic resistance to the bacteria is at least necessary. Additionally probably an injection of something like a 3rd generation cephalosporin plus an aminoglycocide like gentamicin with redness and red streaking are probably essential to quickly stop the infection. The bacteria double exponentially about every 20 minutes creating a huge pus pocket, often requiring major substantial surgical drainage. This is often performed in the office but sometimes it is necessary to be done in the O.R. with drains for those who are resistant to immediately starting antibiotic therapy or waiting several days. The current correct therapy for an abscess is drainage.

We are required by law and do report animal bites. After infection there can be pain for some time and the worry is that the bite may have gone down and nicked a bone causing a periostal cellulitis of the bone. This may require IV for weeks of therapy. It may require a nuclear bone scan to prove if the bite infected the bone. The bone could become infected without proper care and cause significant and progressive degeneration of the bone crumbling and weakening the bone and having you quite sick. Fever, chills, and rigors, shaking are all signs of skin cellulites, abscess, subcutaneous skin, under the skin infections, and even sepsis an infection of the bacteria in the blood.

If it is a wild animal that bit you, it usually must be trapped for diagnosis of rabies. Verification of pet immunizations for rabies is essential and do not hesitate or wait to have this treated by your physician and probably be placed on antibiotics. Many and most infections will just heal from many domestic animals. You will usually know pretty quickly the infected ones will start getting hot and swollen and will not get any better. When in doubt see your physician. This is an absolute that the earlier the better treatment that needs to be evaluated by an experienced physician. Be sure to get your tetanus immunization and keep it up to date. If you are taking steroids, immune suppression, blood disorders, cancer, major organ disease like kidney failure, heart problems seeing your doctor as quickly as possible is even more important.

Types Of Scroll Saw Blades: Part 1

When it comes to choosing which type of scroll saw blade to install on your scroll saw, there are a variety of choices. Here, I will outline the major types of scroll saw blades and in which situation to use each one.

Saw Bits

Scroll saw blades come in two major types: pin end and plain end. The plain-end is a type of blade that is completely flat and is pinched in place between the jaws of small clamps on the scroll saw. The pin-end has a tiny cross pin in each end. The main difference between the two types of blades is the cross pin. The plain end blades are five inches long, will fit almost all types of scroll saws and are more widely available.

Saw Bits

There are several types of plain end blades:

1. Standard Tooth

On standard tooth blades, the teeth have identical sizes and are evenly spread out. Wood blades and metals blades are the two major types. Larger teeth and larger spaces between the teeth are found on wood blades. The design is intended to clear sawdust as one makes cuts. On the contrary, metal blades have much smaller teeth and fewer spaces between teeth. Some can find these to be a bit noisy.

2. Skip-tooth

Skip-tooth blades and standard tooth blades are quite similar. The one thing that distinguishes the two is that with the skip-tooth every other tooth is missing. The gullet, the space between the teeth, is wider and this also helps to keep the blade cool. Most prefer these types of blades. These types of blades are also recommended for newbie scroller sawers.

3. Double-tooth

The double-tooth blade is similar to the skip-tooth blade but the double-tooth has a bigger gullet between two teeth sets. The double-tooth types can produce a very smooth cut; however they can cut a bit slower.

4. Reverse Skip-tooth

The reverse skip-tooth blade is identical to the skip-tooth blade; however the teeth that are found at end of the bottom row point up. When working with plywood and for preventing tear-out splintering at the bottom of the cut, the reverse-skip tooth blade will work very well.

One must remember that when working with a reverse skip-tooth blade one must set the blade in a specific manner. When the saw arm is in its highest position, the blade should be set in the clamps so there are only two to three teeth that are protruding above the table top. If you are not able to do this, you might have to take a little bit off from the bottom of the blade.

Common Types of Table Saws

Table saws or saw benches are large equipment commonly used for woodworking tasks. With its versatile features, most would go for the conventional table saw. A saw is basically made of circular saw blades mounted on arbors and driven by electric motors by gears or belts. The blade then protrudes within the table's surface, supporting the wood being sliced.

Saw Bits

Generally, there are 4 types of table saws, namely; contractor type, benchtop type, hybrid type and cabinet type table saws.

Saw Bits

Contractor types are larger and heavier, having a base or stand attachments and wheels. The motor hinges at the saw's rear drives its blade through a belt with only 750 up to 1500 watts or 1 up to 2 HP of "induction" type motor.

Many prefer to use contractor table saws because of its standard electrical circuitry that provides adequate power for running. It is also cheaper than the other types. However, it may be more difficult to clean because the motor hangs from the saw's rear that traps most dust in the pivot area.

Benchtop table saws weighs lighter compared to others. They are designed for operation while using another support or on a table. They possess a direct drive coming from a general motor. Even a single person can lift and carry this to their job site. Most benchtop table saws are made from aluminum, steel and plastic.

This is the cheapest yet also very limited type of table saw. However, it is still fairly precise and adequate for certain tasks. It has a narrower upper portion that can reduce the stock's width (rip able). Its shorter "rip fence" makes it difficult to project straight, clean cuts while ripping. Their small size means they have lesser mass, and this increases vibration while cutting.

Hybrid table saws are actually intended to compete with the high end contractor table saws. These offer similar advantages with a cabinet saw but for a lesser price. At current, hybrid table saws offer enclosed cabinets to improve dust collection. This can be similar to cabinet saws, along with a complete enclosure starting from the actual table top onto the floor.

Hybrid table saws are heavier than contractor saws and lighter than cabinet saws. There are also some varieties that provide optional sliding tables to improve its cross cutting ability.

Cabinet types are a bit heavy because it is mainly made out of steel and cast iron, both of which are responsible in increasing accuracy and minimizing vibration. Their induction motors range from 3 to 5 HP. If you plan to use this at home, you still need to install a heavy duty circuit.

Its motor is actually enclosed inside the cabinet, driving the blade 3 V-belts parallel. Since it is heavier, it is the most durable among the four classes of table saws. It also has the least vibration. Height and angle of tilt are adjustable. It is easier to maintain with improved dust collections, and is very adjustable.

The American Style and the European Styled Cabinet Saws are the two types of cabinet saws. American style cabinet saws are made from Canada, China and the US. They usually come with a device that prevents kickback. This incorporates splitters, blade covers of clear plastic material, and anti-kickback toothed pawls. Blades can be tilted to either side.

European styled cabinet saws have more modern but complex designs. They come with a good sliding table for precaution, making cutting tasks easier. The rip fences are lighter and a little rougher. These usually have configurations for different purposes, offering planer, joint, boring and shaper features. Sometimes, it comes with a scoring blade mounted on the front portion of a regular saw blade. It is the scoring blade that reduces splintering on certain stocks, especially the laminated ones.
